ie more than the May but not stupidly more bearing in mind the Qutest is a £1200 DAC and we were using it with a £4000 power supply. I then introduced the Chord Qutest into the mix, powered I admit by a Sean Jacobs DC4 with total cost of £5200. We listened in NOS mostly but then tried the OS options. We wanted to like it but just couldn’t come up to scratch.

So I spent a day at his house with his TT2, my Dave and my Mscaler and then full a day at my house with the same DACs comparing to the May with a variety of music. He had high hopes and he offered to let me listen in his system and then he would bring the May and listen to my system.

He reasoned that it was a safe bet because of the GoldenSound video saying the Holo May knocked the Dave plus Mscaler into a cocked hat and also with the ASR measurements which seemed stellar. He therefore decided that the only realistic way to do this was to buy one. Then I happened across someone who wanted to try out the Holo May in his own system on a home demo basis rather than taking up offers to listen for an hour or so in someone else's system. I had seen the video saying the May knocked the Dave + Mscaler into a cocked hat. I can see why you might think that but let me explain. It still sounds wonderful and is significantly influential. The DAC64 is my call for the greatest DAC of all time. From the Hugo onwards it changed significantly, becoming over detailed and a bit too hi-fi. The DAC64 sound was lovely and warm while achieving detail. I think a Dac needs to sound good with that as well as everything else. But some days I just play plain old redbook straight into the Dave or the Qutest.

I also have an HQPlayer license and dabble with that. I do use PGGB but I also still have and use the Mscaler. If the May works out for what people want then it is a potential bargain but people need to hear it first.

All I am saying is that I think that anyone considering the Holo May needs to be aware that even if you are right about what it likes then it is possibly at best a one trick pony and needs to be considered as such when considering purchase. My friend and I have heard a large number of DACs, some good, some average and some not good. This can’t just be explained away by categorising me as a liker of the ‘chord sound’ whatever that is. I'd seen that you were using PGGB, has it replaced the MScaler? I know that GoldenSound uses HQPlayer but can't recall whether or not he used it in the video. I think that the May would be at its best in NOS mode fed upconverted DSD. If both of you enjoy the Chord sound perhaps it was the likely outcome that you'd prefer the TT2, Qutest or Dave.
